Abstract: Elieen Chang, one of the most resplendent stars in the Chinese literature field in 20th century, has always been admired as a great writer and her works have been widely studied as well. Nevertheless, she is such more famous as writer. Being a translator working on translating her own books, Elieen Chang stretches out her role from being a writer to a translator. This study plans to make a comparison between Elieen Chang’s original English-written book, The Rice Sprout Song, and her self-translated Chinese version,《秧歌》(Yang ge).Eileen Chang coincides in “interfering” her own translation work. This could happen because the writer’ try to accommodate to the reader’s culture, this also could be a result of translator’ ideology when doing the translation. In fact, she is her translation’s “writer”. Is it an ideal paradigm for writers to translate their works? Everybody differs in opinion. According to “The Translator’s Task” by W. Benjamin, the translated work is the “afterlife” of the original work. Translation is “rewriting”, based on Andre Lefevere’s views of ideology and manipulation. This study will explore a different focus for the study of translation.
