近十餘年來，由於戒嚴法和報禁相繼解除，出版法也於數年前廢止，出版事業蓬勃發展，出版社和出版品質量俱增，帶動閱讀人口1 0台北市立圖書館和許多分館，讀者人數激增，速度令人驚異，在某些圖書館，還發現有深耕的讀者，有幸認識一些都會讀書隱士朋友，居然是我們社區公共圖書館的忠實讀友!X社區由X讀者構成，令人好奇的X讀者讀些什麼?在圖書館中做些什麼?眼中的圖書館又如何?引發我撰寫本文，慶賀台北市立圖書館建館五十週年館慶。本文分為四部分，了解社區讀者使用公共圖書館、巨觀的統計資料、一個讀者的自述，最後是結語。 Public libraries' users in Taipei as well as in the whole island have grown rapidly in the last decade. This delightful trend can be traced to several factors: the ending of Martial Law in 1987, the lifting of the restriction on new newspapers in 1988, and more recently, the abolition of the Publication Law in 1999. The increase in the number of publishers as well as the variety of publications promotes greater interest in reading and life-long learning activities of the citizen, thus encouraging users to the libraries. This paper argues that public libraries could perform better reader services should we better acquainted with our communities. It first reviews selected research and discusses user profiles and user perceptions of the benefits and effects of public libraries usage. It then presents statistical results of the current status of public libraries in Taiwan. A selfportrait of a selected user of Taipei Municipal Library is illustrated. This paper closes with a proposed scenario for future public libraries.
