In the conventional design of the fuzzy control, the rule base is experience-oriented and the suitable membership functions are decided by a very time-consuming trial-and-error procedure. However, unsystematic approach to the design of the conventional fuzzy controller has reduced the applicability of fuzzy controller. In this paper, a systematic fuzzy controller with shrinking-span membership functions (SSMFs) is constructed to achieve a desired control performance using genetic algorithms.
