    Abstract: 本文評估「早期美國文學」這個領域。晚近批評家將這個領域的起點追溯到一四九二年，也從地理及(或)語言的觀點擴充研究材料。英文不是唯一的語言，英屬殖民地以外的地區也含括在研究領域內。
    文中追溯兩個發展方向：英屬美洲文學(或跨大西洋研究方法)及殖民時期美洲文學(或西半球研究方法)，並主張晚近學者重視早期美國文學政治作用的走向，讓這個領域充滿新的活力。
