Numerous fascinating collective behaviors could be discovered in everyday life including the moving pattern of a bird flock, fish shoal, even a crowd of people due to peculiar event or particular rule in which the movement of an intergroup relationship influenced by invisible gravity. In this study, the space was deemed the factor of collective behavior by which event or rule affected in one specific space. Thus computer software has applied to the simulation of collective behavior, which resulted in various information parameters that supports the generation of forms or spaces the fundamental basis of spatial planning. The illustration of design in this research points to possibilities of space form derived from collective behavior studies.
The process of in the research was divided into three stages. In the first stage, diagram the relationship between behavior, domain, and force field; put collective-behavior-simulation into practice by parametric software Grasshopper and its plug-in Kangaroo, and on the other hand probe into the behavior-space-connection through plan. In the second stage, search for the significances of space and the data parameters of which collective-behavior-simulation has shown; enumerate the daily events as a list of reference data for computer simulation, hence classify different source of force into two groups—point and line. In the third stage, implement the actual design on six chosen sites near by Tamsui River. Several impact factors including spatial character, collective behavior, and disturbing force has inserted into computer simulation during different steps; the result obtained from design process after the procedure of simulation and selection. According to the dissimilarity on sites, the implementation of parametric space-derivation targets on creating the spatial pattern, capturing the particular time-frame of space, and the optimization of spatial planning.
The design of the research revealed that simulation of collective behavior with parametric technique provides an effective method of recording based on parameters. The essential significance of parameter not only shows a category of behavioral data after imitation, but also interprets collective condition and spatial construction within a field; it supports us with commanding invisible messages and shaping a space of collective-behavior-reflected pattern. This research images the capacity of operating architectural design in the future through an anticipation of finding optimal answers between collective group and space.
