The digital and parametric design tools is now widely applied in architecture design, most of which utilizes the irregular curves or surface to serve as the appearance features of digital architecture. However, due to the limited conditions, such as manufacturing mode and material property etc., it requires the transferring process of framework system and details structures from the virtual design to practical manufactured finish products. This study adopts the same unit of canopy structure system to explore the different functions and assistances provided by parametric design and fabrication in different stages from the primary design on paper to practical fabrication. Besides, it also produces a practical work in the real space to implement the virtual parametric design, which links the simulation and fabrication. The study focuses on developing several digital design products of different types with the same unit of canopy structure system.
The study falls into three parts. The first part is about case study and research which discusses the application of structure system and fabrication mode adopted in different types of digital design as well as the reasons of application. The second part takes the unit of canopy structure system as example, to explore the course of design on paper from four perspectives, i.e. the flat organization of units, adjustment of cross section shape, framework of shelter and shape adjustment from the structure design to adapt the different base conditions. Besides, it adds with parametric design tool to check the results of the four aforementioned design courses. The third part focuses on the fabrication method, which probes the possible problems and corresponding solutions through designing different fabrication modes with digital software. Then, it add the conditions like kinetic joints and shape adjustment to continuously design the actual structure system and details of unit of canopy and carry out discussion with the practical mode produced by CNC.
The proposed simple unit structure system can array structures in line with different appearance requirements of architectures and adapt to the parameter modification and adjustment via its kinetic and adjustable features. Under the assistance of digital architecture design and fabrication methods, it can realize the customization and get rid of fixed structure system, to cope with the possibility of different appearance changes generated by parametric architecture design by means of more convenient disassembly and assembly.
