This study examines the effects of education expansion on social mobility. Comparing to the literature, we use the Human Development Index to identify the individuals’ social stratification for the intrageneration social mobility investigating. The data used in this study is the “Survey of Family Income and Expenditure” from 1990 to 2006 in Taiwan. In order to trace the pattern of social stratifications, all observations are combined by their socio-economic characteristics and constructed as a pseudo-panel data. We employ the panel regression models and multinomial-logit models to estimate the probabilities of flow-up and flow-down, and we also measure the flow of total social mobility and social stratifications in the periods. The empirical results show that even though education could still promote individuals’ social stratification, the effects are lighter for those who have just finished high education before the year of education expansion. In addition, this study finds that after a fast education expansion in Taiwan, education level increasing not only make the social mobility stagnation, but also increase the probability of downward social mobility.
