Abstract: In most models on quota, the export restraint is set stricter than free trade output level of exporters because otherwise the restraint is not effective. This is not true in
vertically differentiated markets. Even if the quota is set on the free trade level of the foreign incumbent, it helps a domestic potential entrant to enter the market. Our result suggests that quota has a stronger protection effect of domestic production if the market is vertically differentiated.
