The problem of long propagation delay in underwater acoustic sensor networks is one of big challenges to design an efficiently medium access control protocol for successful data exchange. This paper proposed a cluster-based MAC protocol, called MIB-MAC, to improve the channel utilization and avoid packet collision. In this paper, two transmission situations are discussed, intra-cluster and inter-cluster situations. In both situations, the cluster header is responsible for scheduling the data exchange of each transmission pair. Based on the scheduling algorithm, the channel utilization can be conspicuously improved and the packet collision problem is also solved. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MIB-MAC outperforms the other compared MAC protocols in terms of aggregated network throughput, packet collision rate, and packet transmission delay.
