Large quantity of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is produced each year from roadway maintenance work. In addition to current being recycled in HMA, the RAP might be used as aggregates for rigid pavements, and therefore help to alleviate the problems of natural aggregate shortage and waste disposal. Portland cement concrete (PCC) as rigid pavement surface is a brittle material, e.g., low in ductility. The addition of RAP to the PCC in rigid pavements might improve the toughness of concrete.
This study was to investigate the properties of concrete with the inclusion of RAP. RAP (4.75mm~0.075mm in size) were used to replace portions of fine aggregate in concrete. RAP replacement rates of 0%, 30%, and 60% by weight of aggregate and silica fume replacement rates of 0%, and 15% by weight of cement were also arranged. Laboratory tests were performed on mortar, fresh and hardened concrete specimens, and stress analysis was executed for the RAP included concrete pavement. Based on the results of laboratory tests and stress analysis, major conclusions were summarized as follows:
1.The unit weight of of the RAP included concrete generally decreased with increasing RAP content because of the lower specific gravity of RAP.
2.The compressive, splitting, and flexural strengths of the RAP included concrete generally decreased with increasing RAP content. The reduction rate of the flexural strength was lower than that of the compressive strength in our study.
3.The measured deformations at failure of the RAP containing concrete were generally higher than that of the concrete without RAP. This was the indication of the improvement of ductility and toughness of the RAP containing concrete.
4.The results of the stress analysis showed that the stress ratios of the RAP containing concrete were generally higher than that of the concrete without RAP. The fatigue life of the RAP containing concrete might be shorter due to its higher stress ratio.
