As early as the Nara period, the emperor of Japan has mandated ”The Classic of Filial
Piety” to be the required textbook for scholars of the day. By the time of Heian Period,
scholars who specialized in biographical-thematical history writings (jizhuan )
and the classics (mingjing ) endeavor to research and impart”Yu Zhu Xiaojing”
and ”Kungzhuang”. Since then, in hundreds of years, Japanese scholars in every
period all dedicated to elucidate the value of ”The Classic of Filial Piety”. At the time
of Edo period, the publication of ”The Classic of Filial Piety” and the relevant books
concerned thereof had reached its zenith.
Given this, I consider writings in relation to ”The Classic of Filial Piety” (Xiaojing) in
Edo period epitomized all the research in Japan history. Therefore, with only a small
part discussing the spread history and background of ”Xiaojing” in Japan, the thesis
elaborates mainly the investigation and research of the aforesaid writings and to make a
thorough inquiry of the general situation and the characteristics of their publication in an
attempt to display Japanese scholars’ effort in researching ”Xiaojing”. The first
chapter ‘Introduction’ explains the motivation, content and methods of this research
paper together with my expectation of this research. The second chapter ‘The General
Situation of the Spread of “Xiaojing” in Japan’ primarily discusses the pass down
history of the manuscript copy and the publication of printed copy for ”Xiaojing.” The
third chapter ‘Publication of “Xiaojing” Writings in Edo Period’ divides Edo period into five phases and examines writings concerning “Xiaojing” in every phase to elaborate the
publication features of “Xiaojing.” The forth chapter ‘Re-create of “Xiaojing”
Writings in Edo Period’ discusses the Edo period “re-create” phenomenon of
“Xiaojing” and the related writings effected by the phenomenon to manifest remarkable
efforts the Japanese scholars have been made. The fifth chapter ‘The Values of
Writings Related to “Xiaojing” in Edo Period’ generalizes three values of the
“Xiaojing”-related writings in Edo period from the research of chapter two to chapter
forth. The sixth chapter ‘conclusion’ summarizes the content of chapter two to chapter
five in three aspects: ‘preservation and inheritance of “Xiaojing”- the spread of Filial
(‘Xioa’) culture,’ ‘innovation of “Xiaojing”- a self-reliant corner of Japanese culture’
and ‘development of “Xiaojing”- enhancement and share of the “Xiaojing” documents.’
