Taiwan is one of the most rapidly aging countries in the world. As a result, the emerging issue of building an alternative social support network has become relatively vital. The main objective of this research is to explore possible scenarios for the support network in order to enhance life quality of the coming aging population. According to the literature, children are still the main source of support for the elderly, while the dependent relationships with neighbors and relatives are declining. Nonetheless, the relationships between the elderly and friends are becoming closer than ever and gradually grown to be another important source of social support besides their children. Unfortunately, the role and function of government did not keep up with the pace of the aging trend.
The researcher conducts semi-structured interviews with nine respondents, with ages ranging from 49-58, the so-called future elderly. In addition, the respondents’ gender, occupation and areas of resident are selected with purposive sampling method. The major finding of this research is that children are no longer the main source of support and have been replaced by their spouse as well as close friends. Also, it is found that the future elderly hold positive attitudes to retirement home or institutional care. Based on the findings, this research further adopts futures triangle method to refine the plausible social support network. Lastly, using scenario analysis, four possible scenarios are depicted as “dependent couple,” “social-welfare state,” “disappearing face,” and “spiritual community.”
