We as human beings seem to have the needs of interpersonal and emotional communication along the process of societal development. Through interpersonal contacts with others, we fulfill our desire of a stable relationship. However, with the emergence of internet era and its interplay with the post-industrial society may have caused a new phenomenon of social alienation among the successor generations, the so-called Net generation. This research aims at exploring how and what types of relationship may have been established through the internet in order to satisfy the Net generation’s thirst of interpersonal contacts. Furthermore, based on the major findings, this study will draw possible scenarios on alternative paths of finding love and marriage partners.
Unlike their parents, the Net generation has a much open view on virtual relationship and relatively they do trust the internet as a tool of finding new contacts. Besides, new relationships on the internet do not affect their values toward love and marriage. They will still long for marriage and internet is nothing more than creating a fast and boundless path to meet people in various life spheres. The internet could provide an alternative way to eventually help them finding their soul mates. Moreover, using internet does not affect their behavior of interacting with people in “real world”. For them, the social interaction in reality is more real and true and the friendship will remain longer. Finally, for the coming digital native generation, the research depicts four possible scenarios as “illusive future,” “fantasy future” “sharing future,” and “desired future.”
