After WWⅡ,Taiwan was returned to China and was placed under the control of the Chinese Nationalist Party(Kuomintang). As Kuomintang became the new government institution, Mandarin replaced Japanese as the national language. Even so, Japanese language was still playing an important role in postwar Taiwanese society. During the early postwar period, there were still some Japanese words used in newspapers and magazines. This thesis aims to explore the presence of Japanese language in the early postwar period in Taiwan through the analysis of advertising columns of Min Bao. Based on preceding studies of Min Bao, chapter two describes the overview of newspaper industry in the period and history of Min Bao. Chapter three classifies and analyzes the Japanese words used in the advertising columns. Chapter four mainly focuses on the advertisements written in Japanese language and analyzes those advertisements, by which, the objects of them can be known. Chapter five analyzes the trend of changing company names in Japanese into in Chinese which can be seen in the advertising columns. Lastly, chapter six, based on the analysis of previous chapters, elaborates what kind of role Japanese language did play in the period.
