Before the spatial turn of 1960s to 1970s, people had engaged, for a long time, in historical thinking much more than in spatial thinking. With the contextualization historical thinking, space had been considered as a lifeless and meaningless container, the background of historical and social events.
However, in the mid-twentieth century, a transdisciplinary spatial turn began. Disciplines as varied as archeology, art, anthropology, sociology and accounting, began to accept “space matters”. As Edward W. Soja said, in the last decade of the twentieth century, attention to the spatial aspects of human life and social relations spread in unprecedented ways into nearly every academic discourse.
Henri Lefebvre, the leading spatial theorist and philosopher of the twentieth century, dedicated a great deal of his philosophical writings to understand the importance of space. In his book The Production of Space, he analysed each historical mode as a three-part dialectic between everyday practices and perceptions (le percu), representations or theories of space (le concu) and the spatial imaginary of the time (le vecu).
