Abstract: The present study was designed to test university freshmen' English reading
comprehension proficiency, to determine whether students' total English ability correlates
with their grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension abilities, and to find out the
correlations among grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension scores. In addition,
students' learning strategies were also investigated. As a result, it was found that
university freshmen's English reading comprehension ability was insufficient for their
academic performance, that students' total English scores correlate positively with their
TOEFL grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension scores respectively, and that
there were positive correlations among grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension
scores. Finally, the findings of the students' learning strategies were used as partial
explanations for the students' English reading proficiency.
