Abstract:	自1954 年簽訂台美共同防禦條約後，有關台灣地位問題，變得更為清楚，因為該約載明美國承認中華民國擁有台澎領土。像英國等，亦同時改變對台灣的態度，支持美國的立場。不過，中華民國政府為維護其所謂的「法統」問題，對外仍堅稱代表中國，此一主張顯示中華民國對自己的定位出現矛盾。此一情勢至 1971 年終於告一段落，中華民國代表中國的主張遭到聯合國的否決。美國曾試圖安排「兩個中國」的可能性，亦遭到蔣介石的拒絕。美國在1971 年展開與中華人民共和國的正常化關係。美國為結束越戰，尋求與中國和解，台灣再度成為美國和中國談判桌上的俎上肉。美國的「一中政策」正在形成之中，台灣的地位再度陷入困境。至1972 年，台灣的地位已從「代表中國」退至「中華民國領有台灣澎湖」。
