This paper first explains what is "Movie English", then examines how students use "Movie English" VCD for self-directed and interactive language learning, and synthesizes their evaluation toward this new and popular technology. This is accomplished through the examination of approximately 205 reports collected in late May 1999 from students at Chinese Culture University for the purpose of discovering how students make use of the various aspects related to this multimedia learning aid. This analysis uncovers the factors that lie behind student selection of films and the academic advantages and disadvantages inherent in this entertaining and educational product. Some of the reported benefits include the acknowledgement of the motivational value of this interactive and communicative learning tool, as well as the added benefits of engagement in self-directive learning strategies that lead to lowered levels of frustration and perceived improvements in English abilities. But students also pointed out some designs of the products are not appropriate for their level, recommended adjustments in the tests, and various other details that demand consideration. The ultimate goal of this research is to provide some insights and suggestions for instructors who are looking for more learner-centered, interactive and communicative teaching materials that can be easily adapted to their classroom needs.
