The design of a wireless sensor network must meet the requirement for energy efficiency, small sizes, and low cost due to the limited battery power, memory and calculation capability of the sensor nodes. For such a network, a transport protocol is important because it dominates network congestion, data dissemination, and energy consumption. Transport protocols are usually built to control network congestion or to enhance transmission reliability. For transport protocols built to raise transmission reliability without considering network congestion, performance can be undermined by congested traffic. For transport protocols aiming to control network congestion but not to recover packets lost due to ‘bad’ transmission channels, congested traffic can still happen in an unreliable environment. To improve on these problems, this article presents a new transport protocol which, as experimental evaluation demonstrates, can effectively enhance transmission reliability and meanwhile control network congestion to facilitate data transmission in a wireless sensor network.
