本論文研究東亞與現代性的關係，探討日本在中國面對現代性衝擊時所發揮的中介功能，中國在接受現代性時面臨有如翻譯的情境，並從中解析其與中國現代文學興起之關聯。本論文從翻譯的角度探討魯迅之《阿Q正傳》，尤其是魯迅就讀日本仙台醫學院時發生的幻燈片事件，並由此事件切入西方現代性與日本版現代性之間的接觸點。本論文的主要論點是，兩個消失點接近處是出現洞見最可能的所在。 This paper studies East Asia's reception of modernity, using Japan's mediating role in China's encounter with the West as a point of departure to explore what may result from the subsumption of the particular under the universal. How Japan influenced China in opening up horizons for modern literature will be examined at length. The True Story of Ah Q by Lu Xun (1881-1936) will be chosen to illustrate a translation-like situation China might have found itself in as it observed Japan shifting to the West for reference. I will use, in particular, the slides show incident in Lu Xun's student days at the Sendai Medical School to show how modern Chinese literature arose out of the vantage point of being at the intersection between Japan and the West in their engagement with modernity.
