This study was conducted from visual perspective to re-examine the phenomenon of a living environment filled with the same objects as result of modern industry’s mass production. In this study, Pointillism adopted by Impressionism was first explored, and mosaic tiles adopted in architecture were used for the discussion of relations between micro-units and an organization, after which a special information element in today’s digital era – “pixel” – was identified to construct a basic unit of digital information. The properties of “pixel” were examined to explore the possibilities of its spatial applications.
Space is the embodiment of our lifestyle. In this digital era, a building facade is just like a medium, and the units on the facade are similar to the pixels on a screen. They can be building elements such as bricks, windows, balconies or others. Their compound patterns can lead to different compositions, and each “pixel” can turn into a pure object.
The computation of a computer is to some extent condition-setting and parametricization, which enables the production of different patterns through different combinations and organizations. In this study, Rhinoceros was used alongside a plug-in – Grasshopper - to compile programs for the digital manipulation of pixelization design. The design focused on the changing relations between units. The concept of “seeking differences among similarities” is used to extend design manipulation. Four different pixel surfaces such as picture color gradation, random number, attractor and Moire were selected for design manipulation to re-interpret the “pixel” and parametricization of building facades and create different visual and physical experiences.
