In the research, light material was used to interpret the invisible nature. Through transformation to the technique that is often seen in Japanese culture, natural atmosphere was created in artificial space. In the past, there has been a gray zone between nature and artifact. In architecture, a wall is used to separate nature from artifact and the so-called transition is nowhere to be seen. However, in Japanese cultural art, it is found that they use a very “light” technique to deal with this issue. Japanese follow the view on nature derived from their belief to develop spiritual structure. They find the way to co-exist with nature and develop the cultural characteristics that belong only to Japan. Their excellent ability to interpret natural materials and the way they disguise them after processing change the original state of the materials. These natural materials emphasize the importance of nature in artificial space. The respect Japanese culture has for nature train Japanese to be humble and to respect all things in the world.
In the research, the first section revealed the opinions toward artificial nature from cases of phenomenon observations and techniques of artificial nature techniques. In the second section, nature was interpreted by Japanese’s opinions and techniques toward non-nature and simulation operation experience was done to the forms of nature using the technique of artificial nature. The third section emphasized on the harmonization between human and nature and the construction using light material. In the fourth section, on the base where artifact and nature co-exist, wasteland in the city was used to interpret nature.
In the third section, light material was used to interpret nature and simulate the forms of nature. Moreover, by means of using metaphor on nature, modular building elements were designed. Immaterial building elements such as light, wind, water and plant were used as the main ideas to interpret the invisible nature while integrating material design elements such as paper, fabric, string, plastic pipe, glass, wire and wood. Through different experiments and designing operations, different design transformations were tried which were extended to be the design elements in the fourth section.
In the fourth section, the base was searched for in the city and individual opinion and attitude toward nature were proposed through the re-interpretation of “Ruin Academy of Architecture”. While nature was also interpreted, the research mainly interpreted abstract nature which was different to “Ruin Academy of Architecture”. The research emphasized on the entering of nature and used a different metaphor to interpret nature and simulate the view on nature in Japanese culture by using materials to make the forms of nature. Different forms of nature were discussed and three different means such as technique, material and atmosphere were used as the design elements to construct the overall design. Finally, the feeling of the atmosphere in the space was discussed to realize the deepest view of nature. Color tones and textures were used to seek another possibility of nature interpretation – People’s desire and pursue for nature.
