As regards the chaos that mass media have made, Ministry of Education is trying to popularize education of Media Literacy, hoping the masses could tell mass media rationally, and, no matter the influences that mass media made are positive or not, Ministry of Education hope that the masses could recognize how mass media influence people.
The key point of Media Literacy is to educate the masses what is media and how to penetrate them; however, the so-called teaching materials which instruct people have insights on media have their own political standpoint. Every teaching material has its own theory and standpoint, finding political meanings behind teaching materials is what this researching probes.
This research is done mainly by consulting critical theory, pluralism and democratic elite theory and four theories of the press; I choose media literacy and analyze political meanings behind teaching materials by probing into the issues of violence, sex, race and advertisement.
In this research, I found out that when a teaching material analyze the contents of presses which media make held the institutionalized critical theory; nevertheless, because critical theory usually need radical transformation, the materials aren’t that suitable to be applied in Taiwan. Thus, when making suggestions, modest and progressive concept of social responsibility theory is advised. Considering the way modern society works, it’s better to adopt democratic elite theory as well.
