Introduction: 本系成立於民國52年，名稱為外國語文學系德國語文組，55年改為西洋語文學系德國語文組，自64學年度奉准改為系，旨在訓練德語人才，並以培養從事文化工作者及外貿人才為目標，並以促進中德文化溝通為職責。本系自83學年度起辦理學生赴德國修習學分一年，於90學年度起配合學校政策，遴選學生以交換生身份赴姊妹校進修一年。教學目標為1.培養具德語能力與人文素養的學生。2.培育能自主學習、獨立思考、具有跨文化溝通能力與國際觀的學生。
German studies at Tamkang began in 1963 with a German program within the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. In 1975 the program became an independent department. Since 1984 students of German Department have had the opportunity to participate in summer courses in Germany. In 1994, the Department established the Junior Year Abroad program. Since then, about one third of all students spend their junior year as program students at Bonn University, German. During the first two years of the four-year program a strong emphasia is given to build a solid fundation in practical German. In their junior and senior years, students specialize according to their interest and career plans.
