Abstract: A novel 8-channel neuroprobe completely protected by biocompatible parylene C was fabricated in this study. Instead of conventional etching, laser micromachining was utilized to define the sharp tip. Sacrificial aluminum wires were bound on the platinum electrodes, and then the neuroprobes were fully insulated by parylene. Finally the aluminum wires were broken by shear force and etched chemically to expose the electrodes. The shank of the neuroprobe is 7-mm long with a 05×05 mm2 cross-section area. We have used the neuroprobe to record the neuronal responses of rat’s primary somatosensory cortex. Based on the consideration that parylene has good biocompatibility and thus less tissue damage, we believed that this probe could serve the purpose of long-term recording.
