This paper used a content analysis approach, in which the literature was reviewed from both instructional technology and performance technology perspectives. On the basis of this review, some generalisations are formulated. The results show that the traditional training of instructional technologists focuses only on instructional design ability and ignores important elements related to the field of performance technology, such as outcome, a system view, added value, teamwork and cause analysis. Since the importance of cross-disciplinary enrichment has increased, using a current curriculum as an example, this paper investigates and discusses the five key elements of performance technology for enhancing the training of instructional technologists. Suggestions based on the investigation are presented as well.
