This proposal is to study the electronic/atomic structures and magnetic properties of ferromagnetic/superconductive, CMR, DMS, ferroelectric and graphene-related materials. The aim is to develop a fundamental understanding of the scientific principles that govern the crystalline form, chemical bonding and magnetic properties of novel systems. The experimental approaches will include x-ray emission (XES), x-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES)/extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (PES), scanning photoelectron microscopy (SPEM) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), using synchrotron radiation sources at the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center (NSRRC, Hsinchu) and the Advanced Light Source (ALS, Berkeley).
