This article investigates the paradigm shift in the studies of information needs and uses. Three criteria are applied to compare the differences between traditional paradigm and alternative paradigm: the definition of information, the underlying assumptions, and their different research approaches. This investigation intents to advocate a new thinking in library and information field and a new approach in the research of information needs and uses.
