The proposed research in elementary particle physics and field theory deals with the theoretical issue of gauge independent resummation in gauge theories, which is of fundamental importance in understanding the nonperturbative nature of gauge theories. In particular, the gauge dependence of the fermion quasiparticle poles in high temperature gauge theories as well as the gauge independence approach to chiral symmetry breaking in a strong external magnetic field will be studied in detail. Results to be obtained are essential to phenomenological applications in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, astrophysics of strongly magnetized compact stars and early universe cosmology. We expect that the proposed research will have a broad impact in other areas of physics that also require a nonperturbative understanding of gauge theories. The supported project also promotes the development of graduate students interested in elementary particle physics and field theory.
