Pai Hsien-Yung wrote 11 volumes of fiction from 1958 to 1962. He completed these works before he studied at the University of Iowa in America in 1963.
He presented his novels in literature whose contents included his growth experiences, his childhood and puberty. The themes of his novels described his exploring and struggling when he was a teenager. Mostly, the novels he depicted related to children and teenagers’ enlightened experiences.
In Pai Hsien-Yung’s long novel Crystal Boys, there are 4 main teenage characters named Li Qing, Xiao Yu, Wu Min and Lao Shu. The story started from a young man named Li Qing, whose family kicked him out because his sexual orientation was different from others. In this novel, Li Qing’s situation lasted 9 months, yet after nine months, these four people had changed mentally in different degrees.
This paper will explore the growth experiences of characters in Pai Hsien-Yung’s novels. After experiencing difficult trials in their childhood and puberty, they obtain growth experiences and became mature.
