Five characters including Gou Jian, Fu Chai, Fan Li, Wu Zi-Xu, and Xi Shi from Wu and Yue kingdoms in ancient china are investigated in this paper. These characters’ images in relevant historical data are analyzed first. Then the shaping and evolution of these characters’ images in Tang poetry are discussed. Possible causes that change these characters’ images are explored to reveal the literati thought in Tang Dynasty.
This thesis is organized as follows: Chapter 1 introduces the research motivation. Chapter2 reviews the history of Wu and Yue kingdoms to figure out these characters’ background. Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5 investigate the characters’ images in Tang poetry for two kings—Gou Jian and Fu Chai, two loyal ministers—Fan Li, Wu Zi-Xu, and Xi Shi respectively. We also discuss the rise and fall of Tang dynasty, the appraisement for two different types of loyal ministers, and the chant of Xi Shi which are written implicitly in Tang poetry. Chapter 6 gives our conclusions. This thesis intends to reveal literati thought in Tang dynasty according to poems about Wu and Yue characters, which demonstrates that integrating history and literature is actually a meaningful and valuable research method.
