Opening of economy to foreign direct investment has been an important element of Vietnam’s renovation reforms in 1986. Under the deregulated circumstances, this paper explores the determinants of foreign direct investment in the product of air conditioning. The exploration is based on a conceptual framework under the link between international trade and foreign direct investment as well as the link between foreign direct investment and product life cycle theory. This paper demonstrates how investment climate, economic growth, inflation, and openness jointly determine the air conditioning market demand in Vietnam.

    This paper finds that:
1.The market demand for air conditioning in Vietnam has its high potential.
2.The constraints on growth of business, economic growth, and economic openness in Vietnam can be treated as positive or beneficiary impacts on the air conditioning potential demand.
3.Potential itself reinforced by the comparative static demand for air conditioning explains the bright future of the market demand in Vietnam. This suggests air conditioning firms have the positive incentives of investing air conditioning in Vietnam.

Our findings provide alternative explanations for the empirical evidence concerning air conditioning investment in Vietnam.
