The Taichung Metropolitan Opera House is built near the New Taichung City Hall. Its surroundings consists of Taichung City’s most popular activities, including entertainment, hotels, office buildings and business centers. This new construction, the biggest up to the time when writing this thesis, is scheduled to be completed in
2013. Compared to other art spaces, such as Downtown Cultural District of Pittsburgh and Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, these have already abandoned a certain
traditional model. In other words, these art spaces include all kinds of entertainment facilities. Besides the building’s initial function (performance and exhibition), large amount of open spaces as well as recreation facilities are provided. The building’s appearance is itself very attractive to visitors with strong features. The governing party intends to transform the civic symbol with the art space annexed in this construction. Besides that, the governing party also hopes that the Taichung
Metropolitan Opera House follows the path of Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao in making Taichung City a globally known metropolis.
Upon finishing this thesis, the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House is still an art space that is building itself. This thesis aims at probing into its influence over a city’s symbolism. It is different from what we know as the already-built effective analysis of the space. Therefore this thesis analyzes the influence of the building space on the city’s symbol. First, transform Taichung City’s image through international competitions. Second, building the image of the space and architect through the influence of media’s field. With the media spreading the information, the competition for Taichung Metropolitan Opera House became an international event. The
governing party’s cultural policy was widely reported through the medias. Media reports also transformed the architect’s image, and made them an artist of the
metropolis. Thus the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House became an important site for Taiwan. Although the building of an art space is the governing party’s ambition, which
is to make it into a global city, there is a new path that global cities tend to follow in international competitions. This model was developed from a dazzling architectural space. It has also lifted the architect to a level of planner for the city’s future vision, and made the architect himself a star. Design of art spaces is leaning to a dazzling stage, while international architects and governing parties are developing mutual
