Electronics industry has been a fast-growing sector of economy in Japan and Taiwan over the past few decades. Especially, semiconductor industry holds a critically important position in electronics industry. As represented by the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process which is conducted to planarize the wafer, a large amount of ultrapure is used, and as a result a large amount of wastewater is discharged. We believe that the wastewater reclamation will be achieved by separating nano particles contained in wastewater, using the sophisticated membrane filtration technology. On the other hand, solid-liquid separation of the soft particles such as hydrogels, proteins, emulsions, cells, microbes and loosely formed flocs is applied to the fields of bio-, food and medical technologies and water treatment, and is becoming more and more important especially in Japan and Taiwan, which are scarce of natural resources and therefore depend on such industries manufacturing value-added products as food processing, medicine manufacture and development of new materials. The main purpose of this joint research is to clarify the separation properties of nano and soft particles in membrane filtration, and to afford the optimum design and processing of sophisticated membrane filtration. The mechanisms of the membrane fouling were clarified by investigating the dynamic behaviors of the cake formation and the pore clogging, resulting in the dramatic flux decline. On the basis of these fundamental knowledge, a variety of high performance membrane filtration techniques were developed by conducting cross-flow filtration, dynamic filtration, and hybrid filtration.
