Solar powered desalination technology is very promising for alleviating the energy and water resources shortage issues. Membrane distillation, being capable of directly utilizing solar thermal energy, is becoming a critical developing technology in many countries and is expected to be advantageous in cost. This project proposes an innovative air gap membrane distillation device with solar energy absorption function. The device can significantly improve the effectiveness of the solar desalination plant. At the daytime, solar energy can be utilized by the membrane distillation module and stored in the heat storage system simultaneously. At the nighttime, the membrane distillation module can be operated utilizing the energy from the heat storage system. The project will investigate the innovative device and the overall desalination process by both theoretical modeling and experimental studies. The experimental study will allow the verification of the models as well as demonstrating the feasibility of the system. The model will be used for investigating the effect of operating conditions and design parameters, as well as for the economic analysis.
