In this research, we will focus on the investigations of porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and nylon membranes formation, and their applications in micro-filtration and membrane distillation processes. First of all, both immersion-precipitation and thermally induced phase separation methods will be employed to prepare PVDF and nylon membranes. The preparation parameters that affect the porous structures of the membranes will be studied, and a series of membranes with different porous structures will be produced. SEM, DSC, XRD, and Contact Angle measurement will be used to characterize the formed membranes. Then, the membranes will be applied to micro-filtration operations to understand the effects of porous structure, pore size, and hydrophilicity/ hydrophobicity on the filtration performance. Finally, membranes will also be employed in direct-contact membrane distillation experiments to see the effects of porous structure and pore size on the efficiency of this separation process. It is hoped that this research will provide useful results for the development of porous membranes of commercial value.
