Liquid crystals have played and will continue to play importantly roles for display technology. The key property of liquid crystals for current and future practical applications is their ability to form various dynamic supra-structures. Molecular design comes into play as the main role for the desired dynamic suprastructures. Thus, the two main themes of this project are: (A) to explore new materials to outperform existing liquid crystal materials utilized in liquid crystal displays; (B) to achieve higher molecular correlations within the supra-structures for applications demanding uniform and dense molecular packings, e.g. solar cells and field effect transistors. Therefore, major tasks of this project include: (1) rigid laterally substituted liquid crystals; (2) room-temperature discotic nematogens; (3) helical column formation from propeller-like compounds; (4) tubular supra-structures from macrocyclic liquid crystals; (5) chiral columns from helicenes; (6) manipulations of liquid crystal supra-structures by slef-assembled monolayers. Tasks (1), (2), and (4) will serve to fulfill theme (A). Tasks (3), (4), (5), and (6) are aimed for theme (B).
