Hockey stick molecules consist of 3-alkyloxybenzoic acid or 3-alkyloxy stilbene as bending unit and oligo-ethylene glycol or 2-octyloxy as end chain along the main skeleton are synthesized. Lower mesophase temperatures are expected for the hydrophilicity and branching effect. Mesophases of hockey stick mesogens will be investigated with the in-plane switching (IPS) mode. Transmittance and time constant are measured as function of applied electric field. The results of this IPS mode study would show that hockey stick mesogens are potential candidates for high density LCDs. The results will also provide information for further molecular modification. Effect of steric hindrance due to bulky substituent right next to the meta-chain on the mesophase structures and properties will be studied. The results will shed light for revealing the molecular correlations within the smectic layer and between the smectic layers for the SmC and SmCa phases.
