This paper proposes a novel algorithm for the computer control of container handling in the terminal yard of a port. By making use of the matrix management and the computer memory allocation techniques, an interactive, experimental system for container-handling is established by using an IBM S/34 computer. Some statistical data of Keelung harbour are then collected for a real experiment. The results prove that the proposed algorithm indeed not only provides an effective improvement on the yard utilization but also strengthens the buffering function of terminal yard.
