Buckling of the laminated plates is analyzed by the finite element method according to a higher-order plate theory. In most literatures, the in-plane critical buckling loads are usually the miaplane stress resultants, therefore only parts of Von Karman strains are included in the analysis, i.e. the terms due to the transverse deflection. In this paper, the critical buckling load is taken to be the in-plane stress uniformly distributed through the thickness. The complete Von Karman strains are then adopted. Effects of the nonlinear displacement field of the higher-order plate theory on the buckling loads can be fully interpreted. The finite element formulation is obtained by the perturbation technique. Numerical results are also presented for several benchmark problems. Good accuracy and fast convergence are observed.
