Abstract: The problem of transient melt solidification in the runner during the injection molding process is investigated by the use of a boundary-tracking baaed finite difference method. Simulated results reveal that the thickness of the solid layer is from 1 to 5 percent of the radius of a circular runner when the length is up to 25 cm. It also shows that, for a circular runner with a length of 48em and a radius of 0.48 cm, the calculated pressure drop is lower than that obtained by the TM1C program developed by CIMP (The Cornell Injection Molding Project) in which the melt solidification is ignored. An explanation is riven by examining the shear rate and the temperature distributions in the runner. This method can be used in a runner design routine to balance the flow in the runner of an injection mold by varying its diameter or length.
