A facile method was found to synthesize a novel azulenequinone 2-diazo-1,3-dicyano-6-oxo-2,6-dihydroazulene(4), in yield 90% from the reaction of 2-amino-6-bromo-1,3- dicyanoazulene (2) with sodium nitrite in trifluoroacetic acid at 0.degree.C. The reaction of (4) with methanol, ethanol, acetic acid, benzene, toluene and acetonitrile in photochemical conditions gave related products in yields 82, 82, 90, 85, 40 and 95% of 2-substituted-6-hydroxyazulene derivatives respectively.
