The present article calls for a reappraisal of the Neo-Slavophile trend in Russian thought that evolved out of V. S. Soloviov’s philosophy. Its focus centers on the major representative of this tradition V. F. Ern (1882-1917). Largely neglected and virtually banned in Soviet Russia, Ern’s writings are remembered today mostly for their radical critique of Western rationalism in the name of the Christian concept of Logos. This critique is based on a systematic and positive philosophical outlook aimed at achieving a universal philosophic synthesis and serving as a justification of the Christian faith. It has for its foundations the theory of “ontological”, or integral, knowledge, a personalist anthropology of creative Will and the concept of meta-history or, as Ern referred to it, “catastrophic” history. The author discloses the inner consistency of these three main themes of Ern’s philosophy which constitutes, it is argued, a kind of “alternative” philosophical tradition having much in common with the great traditions of Oriental thought. Hence, the study of Russian “Slavophile” philosophy can render an important contribution to the comparative study of civilizations.
