Bib1iographic record is the hub of a 1ibrary automation system. However, its creation is both expensive and time-consuming. Sharing bib1iographic records from a network or bibliographic utility is a common approach for western languages materials. Since the automation or Chinese libraries does not yet reach a mature stage for sharing a database, an effective and accurate way for inputting bibliographic record is of crucial importance. In order to fulfill such goal, it should base on a deep understanding of the computer capabilities and the characteristics of bibliographic record. The authors describe some important techniques derived from personal experiences. Among those are the use of duplications, default functions, user-defined function keys, and a one-time entry in MARC format.
