Tamkang Automated library Integrated System (TALlS), the modified version of IBM's DOBIS(L1BIS, was jointly developed by Tamkang University library and the Information Processing Center of the University. Its searching, cataloging and circulation subsystems were implemented in September 1986, with the acquisitions and serials control subsystems implemented the following June. The process in modifying the westernized software to incorporate in Chinese & Japanese languages processing capability is described in detail. The author feels that a faster way in undertaking library automation is making use of available packaged software or to implement a turnkey automation system.
