Abstract:	The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of containment on reducing heel stick pain for the premature infant. In this randomized crossover study, 33 eligible premature infants from 5 NICU in Taipei city were recruited. The containment was given before and after 5 minutes taking blood samples from the heel. The interval of each measurement was 24 hours. Data were used to compare the pain reduction with and without containment for the same premature infant while taking blood samples from the heel by Premature Infant Pain Profile. The major findings included: the premature infant demonstated a lower changed mean heart rate, shorter got back to baseline, and lower changed mean oxygen saturation after heel stick with containment that without. In the premature infant pain assessment, only second and third premature infant pain assessments has statically difference (p＜0.001). Overall, the containment can stable the stress physically and behaviorally and also reduce the pain. The author suggests that the uses of containment provides developmental care, reduces discountable and also aims to provide better nursing care.
