Library cooperative activities in the Republic of China have been growing rapidly in recent years. At the same time, computerized library systems also underwent rapid expansion. The Chinese Bibliographic Database, developed by the National Central Library of the Republic of China, has advanced into a fully automated system. However, looking toward the future in a swiftly changing world, one cannot ignore the unyielding trend of library cooperation that should move forward on a regional or even international scale. So far as East-Asian nations are concerned, China, Japan, and Korea have similar histories and cultural backgrounds, and should be the most appropriate partners for the expansion of a regional library cooperative. This article introduces and compares cataloging, and Chinese character processing techniques related to the establishment of a cooperative information network, and analyzes the feasibility of cooperation among the three nations.
