Abstract: Roughness itself is a very important indicator of pavement condition and is useful for making objective decisions related to the pavement network management. The use of pavement roughness information as a criterion for pavement management purposes in Taiwan is not quite prevalent. However, with the growing opportunity of utilizing advanced equipments for obtaining roughness data, a good understanding of the pavement roughness measurements becomes particularly important and helpful for pavement engineers. This paper briefly describes current equipments that are used for pavement roughness measurements. Pavement roughness indices developed by various agencies are summarized. Several key issues related to pavement roughness measurements are reviewed. Conclusions and recommendations based on authors' reviews and concerns over pavement roughness measurements in Taiwan are presented.
