In general, rule-based reasoning in knowledge-based (expert) systems depends on heuristic
and causal rules, and case-based reasoning makes inference based directly on individual
past experience Expert designers have traditionally used both types of inferences to
improve design productivity and quality. Recent knowledge-based systems for structural design
have focused on abstract reasoning rules for designing Great strides have been made in
that area, but little has been done in case-based design. This paper describes a prototype
knowledge-based structural design system that integrates rule-based and case-based reasoning using
    a blackboard model
