    Earthquake resistant design plays a very important role in structural design of buildings in earthquake active areas. The building code and regulations for earthquake resistant design are usually complex and prone to misinterpretations. The design process relies to a great deal on the knowledge and experience of the designers. The aim of the paper is to report the development of a knowledge-based expert system, which incorporates basic structural design theorem and experiential knowledge of domain experts, for the preliminary design of buildings. The layout of the structural system and the initial sizing of structural elements suggested by the system are preliminary design results. Based on these data, users can perform more detailed analysis and design.
